Logical Fallacy Database

Common rhetorical devices and errors detected by Aletheia.

Strawman Fallacy

Misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack. Instead of addressing the actual argument, a distorted version is refuted.

Ad Hominem

Attacking the person making the argument rather than the argument itself. Focusing on character or attributes instead of logic.

Circular Reasoning

When the reasoner begins with what they are trying to end with. The conclusion is essentially used as a premise.

False Dichotomy

Presenting only two options (either/or) when more possibilities exist. Also known as the Black-and-White fallacy.

Slippery Slope

Asserting that a relatively small first step will inevitably lead to a chain of related (negative) events without sufficient evidence.

Red Herring

Attempting to redirect the argument to another issue to which the person doing the redirecting can better respond.

Appeal to Emotion

Manipulating an emotional response (fear, pity, anger) in place of a valid or compelling argument.

Hasty Generalization

Making a rushed conclusion without considering all of the variables. Basing a broad conclusion on a small sample.

Equivocation

Using a double meaning or ambiguity of language to mislead or misrepresent the truth.

(Strawman)

(Ad Hominem)

(Circular Logic)

(False Dichotomy)
